International travel is not for sissies in this day and age. Alright, so some of us are sissies, but we desire to obey our Creator even more. For those of us who like our lives orderly and predictable, missionary is a most strange moniker to assume.

On my application for this position, there were no questions to be answered about whether I liked flying, which I do not. Nor did I see a space to share my dreams and visions for retirement. My preference for climate was nowhere discussed in the interview. Come to think of it … I do not remember getting in a line to volunteer.

My heart conspired with circumstances orchestrated by my mischievous angels to land me some place many miles from home. I was sure 2015 would pass with me not traveling abroad until the New Year. Before I had time to analyze the move, I was packing three suitcases, one carry-on, and my trusty not-to-show dirt shoulder bag.

I probably perplexed TSA with scented soaps, micronutrients, training bras (obviously I’m way way past need of them), 300 pairs of mostly orange socks, candy canes, and chocolate icing for a cake. Christmas was coming early for my beloved ones in Kenya.

As I was winging over the Atlantic, we have no access to world news. We get to eat or drink into oblivion, watch current movies in theaters and TV shows, listen to the latest music, or play games. I still cannot get past the second level of Trivial Pursuit. I was clueless that below me terror was being foisted on Paris, France.

As soon I take the first step on a mission to Kenya, such grace and peace descends. I feel it behind me, in front of me, all around me, and within me. I know my American team is pushing me across the Atlantic with their prayers. My Kenyan team is pulling me in safely.

The shift in security was palpable to those of us who travel abroad. We did not have TVs to see in Amsterdam nor did it hit any newspaper. No one was saying anything. A couple from NYC pursued me through the airport. They had heard me share about my mission to a German couple behind me as we were boarding in NYC.

For the next five hours, we shared. We had coffee and a marvelous almond pastry. Our circle increased. How good GOD is. HE put me to work sharing HIS goodness. At some point, the scents of Frankincense and myrrh wafted through the café. The wife needed some healing. She was raised Catholic, but had lost hope in her GOD. A greater measure of peace descended as HIS presence came so sweet on the smell of the oil. We boarded our flight with no fear.

My last eight-hour flight, which takes me over Egypt and Sudan, found me for much of the time next to a young red headed medical student studying for a month in Kenya. He had some fear. This mama nurse spent a lot of time speaking of her experience with calm and sweetness in her manner.

We had no control over world affairs; no control over our airplane or where our flight would take us. We could chose to stay in HIS peace, and spread peace on earth with goodwill to all men.
